Business English Work Study Program (BEWS)


The Business English Work Study Program is offered in 12 to 56 weeks fulltime programs, comprising 50% academic and 50% paid or non-paid work experience. This course helps reinforce the communication ability of students in a business context and gain work experience in Canada.

Working in Canada

Paid Internship
The average work hour for internship is 30 hours per week, and placement will be in many cases depend on English level, education and experience.

In our Internship Program students will get a sense of the Canadian work environment, get to know colleagues from other countries, and extend their language abilities and career horizons.

Remuneration and pay rate will usually be determined by English communication ability, previous work experience and education.
Course Content
This course has been designed by seasoned business professionals for students who need to use English in the context of international business. In the program, case studies, class projects, work-related situations and exercises will enhance students reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
Objectives
The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. Upon the completion of this course, it is intended that students will:
  1. Develop a personal career portfolio incorporating application forms, cover letters, resumes and proficiency in English interview skills.
  2. Develop a greater understanding and functional ability of International Business language
  3. Study and appreciate a number of North American business leadership methods and styles.
  4. Exhibit proficiency in a variety of presentation skills.
  5. Develop highly functional business writing skills.
  6. Gain valuable business related work experience through paid and unpaid internships.
Major Assignments
  • Career Portfolio: Develop a fully functional personal career portfolio adaptable to different countries.

  • Presentations: A combination of weekly and monthly individual presentations concerning CEO profiles, country profiles, company profiles and assorted group task related presentations.

  • Class Projects: Market research, promotional activities and school fundraising projects.
Students will be assessed in the following areas
  • Presentations – Students will be assessed on their ability to create a logical North American presentation using PowerPoint as well as their ability to use business language and compensate for any accent problems.

  • Writing – Students will be assessed on their ability to write a variety of business correspondence.

  • Conversation – Students will be assessed on their ability to interact in meaningful conversation in terms of their use and comprehension of a variety of business terms and concepts.

  • General Fluency – Students will be assessed in their overall fluency level
Targeted Employment Training
All Business English Work Study students will have Targeted Employment Training at the Canadian College of English Language. Instruction will be given in the following areas: formulating an appropriate curriculum vita, writing a convincing covering job letter, making an effective presentation and impressing an employer at a “job interview”.

English Level Requirements
  1. Students are required to have both Study and Work Permits to enter this program.
  2. Students must meet proper English level requirements as follows:
    • 40 weeks program: CCEL Upper Intermediate or Advanced (Level 4 or 5)
    • 48 weeks program: CCEL Intermediate or Upper Intermediate (level 3 or 4)
    • 56 weeks program: CCEL Intermediate (Level 3)
  3. English Level Assessment: Students are required to take the CCEL on-line written test and pre-screening interview is arranged directly with student.
