| ESL 140 Advanced Academic English, Part I |
This course in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provides advanced ESL students with the opportunity to improve their academic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Upon completion of ESL 140, students are able to analyze academic materials critically and to express themselves fluently, accurately and logically, both orally and in writing. This course runs for 9 weeks.
Prerequisite : English entrance test
Satisfactory pass in English entrance test OR
Minimum TOEFL score of 530 (197 Computer-based) OR
IELTS 5.5 OR TOEIC 700

| ESL 145 Advanced Academic English, Part II |
This EAP course is a continuation of ESL 140. Students further develop their abilities to collect and synthesize information from a variety of academic sources; analyze and critique materials; and present their ideas in a variety of media in accordance with the academic standards found at the first-year university level. This course runs for 9 weeks.
Prerequisite : ESL 140
Students who successfully complete ESL 145 will receive a letter of completion from the English Language Program at the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta . The office of the Registrar and Student Awards accepts this letter as proof that the student has achieved the level of English language proficiency required of all international undergraduate applicants. |
| Conditional Admission to Undergraduate Studies |
| Completion of ESL 145 will meet the English language proficiency required but students must apply separately with all supporting academic documents for entry into the University of Alberta undergraduate program. CCEL staff will assist with this process. |
| The Process |
Application for EAP Courses (ESL140 and ESL145) at CCEL
- Either send official proof of results from TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS or CAE to CCEL or be prepared to write the English Language Program placement test scheduled at the beginning of each term at CCEL (students who do not meet the required entry level must take Intensive English courses at CCEL until they reach that level)
- Students will be sent an invoice and further instructions for official registration and for obtaining a visa.
