Elective Sample - Film Studies

Based on the textbook “Film” by Stempleski/Tomoliw (Oxford, 2001) and incorporating script excerpts, DVD extracts, and other related materials. Students will study all aspects of film focusing on appreciation, interpretation, and creation. By necessity, all films shown will be in English subtitled where possible.

Assessment Basis
Students will be evaluated on participation in class discussion/activity and on creation/completion of assignments in and out of class. There will be no formalized testing.
Outcomes
The students will gain an understanding of:
-The place of film in our world.
-The visual language of film (appreciation/creation)
-How film and film related materials are created
-Critical responses to film
-Comparing genre and cultural factors
-Interpreting character
-How to produce film related materials
