Certificate & Diploma in Business English (BEC)

The Certificate in Business (BEC) helps reinforce the communication ability of students in a business context. This course was developed through the University of Cambridge and is internationally recognized. With the help of work-related situations and exercises, the course assesses reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This course is designed for students who need to use English in the context of international business.

Course Content

This course covers a variety of topics relevant to the current business market. These include, company structure, communication at work, advertising and promotion, business ethics, recruitment and training and customer service. Students study reading, writing, communication, and structure as a part of this integrated course.

Afternoon Electives

Students registered in the Certificate in Business (24 hours per week) choose one elective in the afternoon. The Business English or TOEIC electives are recommended for those who want to reinforce the skills and structures learned in the am class. Students also have the option to focus on other specific skills if they so desire. Other elective classes include: Communication, Current Events and Media, Grammar, Pronunciation, Vocabulary Building, Writing, and TOEFL.

Course Length
This Program runs for 8 and 12 weeks with set start dates. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared and eligible to write the Cambridge Business English Certificate Exam. This certificate is recognized internationally as a standard for proficiency in Business English.

The Teachers

All instructors are university graduates with specialized ESL teacher training in addition to having met the requirements of the Canada Language Council.

Teacher Profile - Neil Burnett

Neil Burnett received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Victoria in 1993. In pursuit of this degree, he studied a great deal of Classical Greek and Latin, which provided him with a solid foundation of English Grammar. Neil received his Masters Degree from the University of British Columbia in 1996 and his TESL Certification in 1997. He spent 2 years teaching in Asia before joining the CCEL team. In Asia he also learned to speak Mandarin. Although he teaches primarily at the advanced levels, he has taught all levels including specific skills classes in Cambridge, Business and Writing. Neil was a member of the Juno award winning band The Paperboys and continues to play a variety of instruments in his free time.
