Cambridge ESOL exams can be taken by anyone whose first language is not English. They are suitable for learners of all nationalities, whatever their first language and cultural background, and there are exams suitable for learners of almost any age.

The Cambridge exams cover all the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. They include a range of tasks which assess a students' ability to use English, so that in preparing for the exams, students develop the skills they need to make practical use of the language in a variety of contexts. Above all, the Cambridge exams assess the students' ability to communicate effectively in English.

FCE is designed for learners whose command of English is adequate for many practical everyday purposes, including business and study. Successful candidates will have a wide grasp of vocabulary, and should be able to construct an argument and use appropriate communication styles for a variety of situations. They also need to show an awareness of register and of the conventions of politeness and degrees of formality as they are expressed through language.

CAE is for learners who are reaching a standard of English that is adequate for most purposes, including business and study. Success at this level indicates the ability to use English effectively and perform confidently in social and professional situations, and in higher education.

CPE is for learners who have achieved a high level of language skills and are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context. Successful candidates at this level are approaching a standard of English similar to that of an educated native speaker. The exam also requires an appropriate level of educational and personal maturity.
