Message from Lea Thorson Owner of Dreamscape Ranch
Before explaining what being an International Student at Dreamscape involves, some information about Dreamscape itself. Dreamscape is owned and operated by Lea & Bud Thorson. Dreamscape Ranch is 160 acres, or a quarter section, in the community of Knutsford. We are about 18km outside of Kamloops and our nearest neighbours are about 4kms away. Knutsford is a very friendly place and there are often community events, either at the local Knutsford Hall or one of the neighbours properties. It is not like living in the city, we don’t often go into town, we prefer to spend our time out here enjoying the beauty that is Dreamscape.

So you may be thinking, what exactly is living on a ranch like, well, let me see…
It’s hard to describe a typical day, maybe it’s easier to describe the various aspects of Dreamscape and how you can help with them while you are here. Firstly Dreamscape is a working horse ranch, we have many horses here, some for riding and some who are retired and some who will be having foals this year. There is plenty of work to do involving the horses, feeding, mucking out and caring for the broodmares and foals. There are also ranch jobs which are not directly related to the horses, fencing, clearing and collecting firewood and harrowing the fields. For the riders among you there are ample opportunities to ride in our arena and on some beautiful trails. The horses can be ridden English or Western, whichever you are more comfortable with. Also summer brings the ‘Team Penning’ season, this is a rodeo sport – a bit like sheepdog trials but on a horse and with cows! You will be able to give this sport a try and go home a real rodeo star.

Secondly Dreamscape is a home, you will be sharing the place with Lea, her husband Bud and 4 very friendly dogs (who do live in the house). This means there are household chores that everyone shares – housework, washing the dishes, gardening projects, feeding the dogs, cooking and baking – the food is very good, but please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements before you come as we can then cater to you and make your stay as pleasant as possible. You will be staying in either one of the ranch houses or in a western style bunk house.

Not forgetting your family and friends back home, internet access is available for a nominal charge. However there is no cell phone network coverage at the ranch. For phone calls, international phone cards can be purchased in Kamloops, rates are very reasonable, or your family and friends are welcome to phone the ranch. Please make sure they are aware of the time difference.

Finally Dreamscape is also a Bed & Breakfast/Guest Ranch and there may be guests present during your stay, everyone helps out when there are guests – entertaining, serving food, manning the BBQ and helping out with riding lessons and trail rides.
