Elective Sample - Music Appreciation
spacer

Music from a variety of genres which span many decades is used to introduce students to the messages in the lyrics.

Each week a different theme is introduced such as “Good/Bad Relationships”, ”Protests and Society”, or “Happiness/Sadness”. Songs are presented from a different decade each day of that week, from 1950-2000.

Students listen to the song, complete a fill-in-the-blank activity, then proceed to discuss in groups and as a class what the lyrics mean and what their significance is. In addition, students will be exposed to a new series of vocabulary and idioms

Unlike regular English courses, this course will allow students to express themselves much more artistically .

Assessment Basis
At the end of each week, students will be asked to present their summary of the themes and messages in that week’s songs. This can take place as written assignment, but will more commonly be done as oral presentations.

When an artist is repeated over the weeks, students will also be asked to make comparisons between his or her work.
Outcomes
• Students will achieve an appreciation of music from different genres, covering a range of time periods.
• Students will be able to analyze and interpret the literal as well as metaphorical meaning of song lyrics.
• Students will build student vocabulary, especially contemporary idioms and common usage.
• Students will further improve student pronunciation, focusing on rhythm, stress and intonation patterns.
